Why do I get bounced mail which i never sent ?
Many spammers and viruses will select random email addresses to send spams to promote their product or to infect people’s computers.
They will also randomly pick addresses to say that the email will be sent from that address (known as Email Spoofing). This is done to increase the validity (or indeed suspicion) of the desired sender’s address.
Unfortunately, spammers send emails and viruses using open relays (servers that do not require authentication) as they use your own integrated SMTP servers to send out viruses. This is because the fraudulent emails come from a different source. We don’t have a way to stop that.
However, you should get everything up to date if you think you are infected with a virus. In addition, you should check your system constantly to secure the software (particularly for Windows with Outlook, because the e-mail program for e-mail virus authors is the most popular) and email. Avoid using dictionary words and use well-selected passwords to protect your email accounts.
Here are some ways you can protect yourself and your email account from being attacked and spammed:
- Don’t unsubscribe from a spam email as spammers will know they have a valid email address.
- Create a separate email address strictly for use on websites.
- If you have enabled the catch-all feature for your domain, turn it off temporarily.
- Set up an SPF record to prevent further abuse to your domain.
